The doors shown here are commissioned by individuals who care deeply about the character of the places they inhabit. These are clients who notice proportion, who value restraint, and who understand that an entryway sets the tone for everything that follows.
Each commission reflects a collaboration between the client, the building, and the making process itself. The result is not a product, but an object placed with intention.
Frequently Asked Questions
We’re often asked what it means to commission a door through Brownstone Door Co. The following notes offer clarity on the scope of our work and how we approach it.
1. What kind of doors can be commissioned?
Our work centers on the fabrication of hardwood entry and vestibule doors for residential and select commercial buildings. Each door is commissioned for a specific place and designed in response to its architectural context, balancing proportion, material, and performance.
2. What is the typical investment for a custom door?
Most entry door commissions begin in the range of $30,000–$50,000, with more complex assemblies, larger openings, or specialized detailing extending beyond that range. Final pricing reflects scale, material selection, design complexity, and site conditions. Each project is evaluated individually as part of the commissioning process.
3. Do you offer door restoration or repair?
We do not undertake restoration or repair work. Our practice is focused exclusively on the making of new doors, informed by historic precedent but fabricated as contemporary objects intended to endure.
4. Do you fabricate interior doors?
We do not. Our work is limited to entry and vestibule doors, where scale, exposure, and architectural presence demand a high level of attention and judgment.
5. Do you have a showroom or doors in stock?
We do not maintain a showroom or carry inventory. Each door is fabricated for a specific project. Visits to our Brooklyn workshop may be arranged by appointment, offering an opportunity to see work in progress and understand our making process.
6. Do you assist with Landmarks Preservation Commission filings?
Yes. For projects located within New York City historic districts, we prepare and submit Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) applications and supporting drawings as part of the commissioning process.
7. Do you offer installation?
Installation is not assumed, but it is carefully considered as part of the overall commission. We recommend working with experienced installers familiar with solid wood doors and historic or custom conditions. When appropriate, installation may be coordinated as part of the project to ensure continuity from fabrication through completion.
As part of early planning, it is important to understand the scale of installation work involved. It is a substantial component of the commission and is priced accordingly. In many cases, the cost of installation is comparable to the cost of the door assembly itself, reflecting the level of labor and precision required to install a hardwood entry door properly, particularly within existing or historic openings.
